I have always been amazed at the power of essential oils and have been drawn to learn more about them from a very young age.

I grew up in a household in where most things were handmade, recycled, food was fresh and for us it was very important to try to live in a non toxic and clean environment. I guess I was fortunate enough that this way of living and thinking was embedded in me from my parents and grandparents for this reason I am so passionate about body and mind well-being.

I am not at expert by any chance but I am a very curious student and have been learning for a very long time. There’s so many ways that essential oils can be used in our everyday life that is mind blowing! Their aromatherapy properties makes them a powerful plant-based extract concentrate that can uplift your spirit, mind and body!

For the vast majority of us, the primary understanding of essential oils is simple: they smell wonderful. While this absolutely true, there are a lot of other fabulous benefits that they can bring to all areas of your everyday life!

What are essential oils?

An essential oil is a strong and concentrated aromatic compound that is generally extracted by distillation of natural plants and flowers, such as lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, etc. They contain the “essence of” the plants scent … in a few words they are AH-MAZING!

Did you know that the use of essential oils goes back to ancient civilizations? Yes, that is right, crazy huh! Powerful aromatic substances have been used as early as the 2000 BC! Egyptians mastered the use of essential oils for medicinal benefits, beauty care (perfumes), spiritual healing, and this knowledge was passed onto Chinese, Greek, Roman civilizations.


How can essential oils be used?

One of the most common use of essential oils is found in home fragrancing. Essential oils offer an all-natural alternative to the highly-processed (and potentially harmful) synthetic fragrances often found in room sprays and air fresheners. Essential oils can be used in home diffusers, oil burners, reed sticks, candles, soaps and room or linen sprays.

In alternative medicine, aromatherapy uses plant materials and essential oil blends to improve your body and mind well-being as a preventative or pain relief treatment against certain conditions.

Essential oils can affect your emotional state, alleviate fatigue, reduce anxiety/ worry and promote relaxation. When inhaled they work on the brain and nervous system through stimulation of your senses. What a beautiful balancing treat for your body and mind!


Essential oils for skincare

The skincare industry is one of the biggest in the world, and we’ve all winced when looking at the prices for the latest must-have body lotions and cosmetic products. Yep!... I’ve been there and know how those expensive products can take a big chunk of your savings AND they are packed with synthetic ingredients which are not good for you anyways.

So... for those like me, seeking a natural, simpler and economical alternative, then essential oils can be the perfect savior!

  • Acne is a common skin complaint for people of all ages, despite the belief that we leave this irritation behind with our teenage years. There are a number of essential oils for acne prone skin, but most people find the following produce the best results in the body: tea tree, lavender, clary sage, or peppermint.

  • Another of essential oils benefits for skin includes the ability to brighten and improve skin texture, with lemon, bergamot, and geranium particularly popular choices to achieve this goal. Caution: Lemon essential oil is photosensitive so do not wear it and go out in the sun as it may cause hyper pigmentation.

  • Some people have also found that essential oils have excellent anti-ageing capabilities, with ylang ylang, rose geranium, lavender, pomegranate seed, and frankincense oils all perfect for achieving the youthful glow we’re all after.

Essential oils for mental health

Many people have found that essential oils offer a natural alternative to synthetic, manufactured cleaning products, so here are a few ideas you might want to try:

  • Lavender is perhaps the best known of the essential oils for anxiety thanks to its ability to soothe and calm the mind.

  • Peppermint is also a common choice for anxiety or stress, and is particularly well known for its ability to help people feel stabilized and grounded.

  • Floral oils, such as ylang-ylang and rose geranium, are good choices for people looking to help chase the blues away and manage the symptoms of feeling low.

  • Finally, citrus essential oils - such as lemon and orange - are well-known for their ability to boost mood and provide additional mental clarity as and when required.

You could also use an oil burner or diffuser to complete with your chosen essential oil, filling the room you are in with natural scents and benefiting from the additional mental well-being properties of your chosen oils.

  • Lemon essential oil is a popular choice for home cleaning, and can be added to water and used as a multipurpose spray. Bonus: it also smells amazing!

  • Tea tree essential oil is known for its anti-fungal properties, and can be used - diluted - to help banish nasties such as mould and mildew.

  • Lavender essential oil is a genuinely multi-purpose oil, and is particularly useful as a surface cleaner thanks to its antibacterial properties.

  • Finally, orange essential oil is a great natural degreaser that can cut through oil and grease stains every bit as well as any overpriced commercial cleaner.


Are there any precautions that need to be taken with essential oils? 

As mentioned, essential oils are extremely potent and concentrated, so they have to be treated with care. As a general rule, you should always use them in diluted form.

In addition, it is important to discuss your intended use of essential oils with a doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, are on prescribed medication, or have any underlying health conditions.
